Most people go to Uganda to see the Gorillas, but actually there is so much more to see and do in this special place.
Travelling across the country means that you get to see the fantastic scenery, which continues to amaze you – one moment you’re in the lush mountains and the next you’ll find yourself in the beautiful Lake Mburo National Park, where it is flat and has the most breathtaking views, which go on for miles. The landscape just keeps on changing and is incredibly diverse.
All of the lodges and hotels you stay in are all of exceptional standard. From the tented lodges, where you are right back to nature with the animals all around you, to the lodges up high in the mountains with incredible views. It isn’t about backpacking- it’s about doing it in style! The service form the staff is so personal that they make you feel like you are the only person there.
Rising early in this part in the world is a must! You have to take in the surrounding beauty from every stop on the tour. The feeling of seclusion and peace is nothing like we are used to in the western world – it transports you to a place that allows you to become so close to the natural world.
The people are so warm and welcoming; they were fascinated by our cameras and technology, which show what a completely different life they lead. It’s all part of the rich culture and makes an impression on everyone who visits. This trip is real life and you have a real experience because of it.
Seeing Gorillas in their natural habitat is an incredible experience. Trekking deep into the jungle, the most amazing part is that every person gets a completely unique experience, as you literally carve a new route through the beautiful undergrowth yourself. One moment you are climbing up the hill and then you can walk around a corner and find a Gorilla staring back at you. With the support from your guide you can get so close that you’ll see the young in the trees, protected by their mothers. What could be more of a special experience?
But it’s not just about trekking, the river boat cruise and game drives offer you the chance to see a wide variety of different animals and widelife in their natural habitat. If you have visited South Africa and Kenya, then Uganda should be on your list as well.
You’ll need a certain level of fitness and a good pair of walking books for this trip, but the experience is something I will have in my heart forever.
