The living laboratory of Charles Darwin is one of the most unique destinations in the world. Dramatic landscapes together with the spectacular natural diversity of these enchanted isles make this experience like no other. The surreal volcanic landscapes, ancient giant tortoises, a myriad of bird and marine life with the opportunities to swim in the waters alongside the penguins and sea-lions offer life-changing memories.

Lying 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are home to a rich array of wildlife. Each island is completely different to another, from large mountainous peaks shrouded in mist and forest to mere reefs and submerged rock. Be enchanted by the dance of the blue-footed boobies or observe the antics of the waved albatross. April is an ideal time to witness the unbridled natural beauty of the Galapagos. The Waved Albatrosses, unique with bright yellow beaks, yellow-cream necks and head and brown bodies, can be found nesting on the Espanola island in the Galapagos in large colonies.

2009 will mark 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin. Born on the 12th February 1809, Darwin was a naturalist on-board the H.M.S Beagle, when he first discovered the Galapagos Islands. This encounter saw him formulate the theories that would later take form in his controversial book “On the Origin of Species,” written 150 years ago. This book set science and religion on a collision course that still reverberates today. Darwin’s ground breaking theories on evolution remain at the core of biological thinking and his important contribution was recognised by the founding of the Charles Darwin Research Centre on the island on Santa Cruz, lying in the heart of the Galapagos archipelago.
