Bag a Bargain at the Syria Leather Festival

Syria’s annual International Leather Goods Fair, taking place in Damascus each August (this year 28-31 August 2008), is the place to be if you are after the latest leather shoes, bags and coats. That’s why Bales Worldwide is featuring a new eight day holiday experience to this fascinating country, that culminates with the leather festival.

Historically Syria held a major position on the trading route between east and west, and today it is still one of the most important manufacturing countries of leather in the Arabic region. Its leather festival attracts buyers from around the world and gives yet another reason to visit this wonderful country with its rich and diverse heritage.

Our eight day holiday departs on 23rd August and gives a flavour of this incredible, largely undiscovered country and an insight into the Arabian way of life - with two nights in Aleppo, one night in Hom, two nights in Palmyra and two nights in Damascus.

Aleppo is one of Syria’s great trading cities and is a bustling enclave of souks and khans that have been there since the 3rd century BC. Walk its vibrant streets, wonder at the elegant Umayyad Mosque and browse the many shops and markets. After Aleppo, and on route to Hom, visit the Monastery of St Simeon, where the saint spent 42 years of his life chained to the top of a column preaching twice a day.

Palmyra, described as the ‘Bride of the Desert’, is one of the most impressive and best preserved of all the ancient sites of the Middle East. Wander around the ancient ruins in the glow of the early morning sun, marvel at the sunset from the nearby castle and enjoy the total peace and tranquillity of this oasis town. From Palmyra head to the capital, Damascus, which can justifiably claim to be the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. This ‘Pearl of the East’ offers wonderful sightseeing opportunities, from the charming 18th century Azem Palace, to the beautiful Great Mosque – just remember to leave time for a spot of shopping at the leather festival!

Throughout the tour you will stay in some of the most elegant heritage hotels the country has to offer. Aleppo and Damascus can boast some of the finest boutique hotels, including the Ottoman splendour of the Beit El Wakil and the luxurious Diwan Rasmy – both within easy reach of Aleppo’s Bazaars. In Damascus, head for the 17th century Al Mamlouka with its oasis of tiled courtyards and Damascene frescos.
