Morocco: So near, yet so differant

The highlights for me were Fez; a medieval city that still works and breathes with the smells of spices and the sounds of craftsmen hammering at brass ornaments. Tales of the Arabian nights come to life, but take a guide if you don’t want to get lost in the old city with the labyrinth of streets, each a photographers dream. Make sure that you take plenty of memory for your camera, or film, and spare batteries – you will need them.
Then Essaouira; watching the fish being landed by the old fort, the seagulls savaging the left-overs, and then having fresh BBQ sardines for lunch at a small pavement restaurant (there are a lot to choose from) Such memories.
The most magical experience was having a Moroccan dinner served on the roof terrace at our Riad in the heart of the old city of Marrakech with the sun going down, the monuments illuminated, and the night-time sounds of the city drifting up from the streets below. No brochure photograph can do justice to a Riad; they transport you back to a time when the stress of the mobile phone, internet and waiting in queues were but a nightmare. A truly inspirational experience.
