The city itself is located at the confluence of the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai Rivers, the setting for the notorious Death Railway and its infamous bridge, where close by, the graves of nearly 2,000 POWs still occupy the Chong Kai Cemetery. The hotel has a 60-metre swimming pool, 2 floodlit tennis courts, a fitness centre and a beauty and hairdressing salon. Mongolian 'gers' Outside Ulan Bator, accommodation is in the traditional circular tents or 'gers',made from canvas stretched around a fixed wooden framework. Facilities are very basic, each ger containing 4 beds, a wood stove, table and chairs, but little else - the communal shower block is separate and there is a central dining tent. Hot water is not always available. This tour is therefore only suited to more adventurous travellers who are prepared to accept these basic facilities,which are in fact the best available in these destinations. For 2006 Bales are again pleased to advise you that we have secured accommodation based on 2 passengers only in each ger instead of 4. Until the early years of the 20th century the northern capital of Chiang Mai was accessible from Bangkok only by a complicated river trip or a journey of several weeks on elephant back; now you can enjoy this beautiful region by air-conditioned car, staying in first or medium class hotels and enjoying a full and exciting sightseeing schedule ending with a relaxing beach stay in Phuket.

    Day 1 Late morning departure with Thai Airways from London Heathrow to Bangkok.

    Day 2 Arrive in the early morning and transfer to the Oriental Hotel (deluxel) or the Amari Watergate Hotel (superior) for 3 nights. Afternoon visit to Bangkok's Grand Palace which is one of the most beautiful samples of an ancient Siamese court. Here you will see places which were used for different occasions; the Funeral Palace, the Reception Palace, the Throne Hall, the Coronation Hall, the Royal Guest House, and the beautiful Emerald Buddha Temple.

    Day 3 At leisure. You may wish to take an optional excursion to the colourful floating market at Damnern Saduak or to the infamous bridge on the River Kwai.

    Day 4 This morning we drive to the ancient city of Ayutthaya to visit the atmospheric ruins. For some 400 years (14th to 18th centuries), a period regarded by the Thais as their Golden Age, Ayutthaya was one of the wealthiest cities in Asia. Continue to Bang Pa-In, the Summer Palace of the Thai kings. In the afternoon we return to Bangkok by boat along the Chao Phraya River. (B)

    Day 5 We take the short flight north to Sukhothai, the capital of Siam from 1240 until the early 15th century. We visit the attractive ruins before continuing to Sukhothai's twin city of Si Satchanalai with its superb Wat Chang Lom (Elephant Shrine). After lunch we drive to Lampang to visit the Wat Phra Dhat Lampang Luang, one of the most important temples in northern Thailand. Our final destination today is Chiang Mai, where we transfer to the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi Hotel (deluxe) or the Royal Princess (superior) for 3 nights. (B)

    Day 6 Chiang Mai was for centuries the capital of the fabled Kingdom of Lanna, and remained isolated from Bangkok until as recently as 1938. In the morning, take a brief look at the city and then travel to the outskirts to visit the magnificent hilltop Doi Suthep Temple, with its golden spires and bronze Buddhas. Afternoon at leisure. In the evening there is the option of attending a performance of hilltribe dancing with a traditional 'kantoke' dinner.

    Day 7 At leisure with the option to visit an elephant training camp, or to look at the many handicrafts that are produced in the region around Chiang Mai.

    Day 8 Drive to the famous Golden Triangle, a remote but beautiful area of mountain and jungle for a 3 nights stay at the Anantara Resort & Spa. (B)

    Day 9 Drive to Mae Chan district and continue uphill to visit simple Akha and Yao hill tribe villages. The Akha, originated in Tibet, and the Yao originated in China, are heavily influenced by Chinese traditions. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

    Day 10 The Golden Triangle for centuries was known as the centre of the opium trade. Visit a hill top viewpoint, above the junction of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers, which forms a three-way border with Laos, Burma and Thailand. Continue to Mae Sai, the northernmost point of Thailand, to observe border life and explore the market for exotic goods. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

    Day 11 Drive to Chiang Rai Airport for the afternoon flight via Bangkok to Phuket. Transfer to the Banyan Tree Hotel (deluxe) or the Amari Coral Beach Resort (superior) for a 5 nights stay. (B) Days 12 to 15 At leisure (B each day)

    Day 16 Morning flight to Bangkok and connect with Thai Airways flights to London Heathrow arriving this evening. (B)
