CHRISTCHURCH

CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch is nicknamed the ‘Garden City’ with good reason: its Botanic Gardens feature one of the finest collections of exotic and indigenous plants in New Zealand, all in 21 hectares totally dedicated to the horticulturist’s art.

COOK STRAITS

COOK STRAITS

Dividing the North and South Islands, Cook Straits are flanked by Wellington to the north, while southwards lie the Marlborough Sounds and world famous Cloudy Bay. Just 92 kilometres from the capital down to Picton, and a mere three hours, it’s a voyage that will forever last in your memory. Interislander’s three vessels offer a wide choice of sailings and great on-board facilities, making what’s been described as “one of the most beautiful, scenic cruise crossings in the world”, even better.

COROMANDEL PENINSULA

COROMANDEL PENINSULA

Just a 2 hour drive from Auckland lies the stunning coastline, white sand beaches and forest hinterland of the Coromandel. With a range of short coastal paths to multi day treks, it’s a walkers’ paradise. DUNEDIN

DUNEDIN

Dunedin’s diversity of coastal wildlife is unmatched as it provides a haven for kinder climate loving Antarctic species. The world’s only mainland albatross breeding colony is on Taiaroa Head, above a colony of Shags perching on the cliff crags. The Yellow Eyed Penguin, the world’s rarest, lives here as does the shy Little Blue Penguin. Dunedin is a Victorian and Edwardian heritage city. It also proudly hosts New Zealand’s oldest Botanic Garden.

FRANZ JOSEF & FOX GLACIERS

FRANZ JOSEF & FOX GLACIERS

The Franz Josef Glacier offers awe-inspiring views of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman – New Zealand’s highest peaks. It’s best appreciated on a ‘heli-hike’ through its valleys. Down the highway, at the foot of another spectacular ice domain, lies Fox Glacier Township which was founded in a goldrush. Evidence of those times can be found at the nearby mining settlement of Gillespies Beach. Whilst Lake Matheson which reflects Aoraki, is equally spectacular.

HAWKES BAY

HAWKES BAY

Not visiting Hawkes Bay world-class wineries would be a mistake. Why not do it NZstyle on a bike? The relatively easy tour takes in vineyards, olive groves, ostrich farms, horse studs, orchards, six wineries and, yes, some of their stupendous output! Hawkes Bay is also home to a vibrant arts scene and a rich Maori cultural history. It’s also proud of its local artisan foods, gourmet meats and other epicurean delights which compliment its many award-winning wines. A big draw for nature lovers are the safaris to the unique Gannet Reserve at Cape Kidnappers, on the east coast. As the ‘Takapu’ is usually an island breeder this is a rare sight and this is, in fact, the largest and most accessible mainland gannet colony in the world.

HOT AIR BALLOONING

HOT AIR BALLOONING

If you live somewhere that has gaping wide open farmland, adorned with orchards and vineyards, back dropped by picturesque mountains then you would want to show it off, and when the prevailing weather conditions are calm, the best way is from the basket of a hot air balloon. Hawkes Bay offers a range of flights, including dawn take offs over the Wairarapa, flying across the Heretaunga Plains area including Hastings, Havelock North and the western plains.

LAKE TAUPO

LAKE TAUPO

With a spectacular volcanic backdrop, this region has a unique combination of wild landscapes, including pristine bush, hot mineral pools and Australasia’s largest fresh water lake, fed by the crystal clear waters from adjacent snow-capped peaks. Close by, Tongariro Crossing lays claim to the best one day hike in New Zealand, and the Tongariro National Park is a dual World Heritage area, recognised for the park’s Maori cultural as well as its volcanic features.

MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS

MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS

On the South Island’s northern tip lie Queen Charlotte Track, Keneperu Sound and Pelorus Sound. A winding water wonderland of drowned valleys and sheltered bays, fringed by untouched forest, the Marlborough Sounds were created by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea level. They offer a cruising, kayaking, waterskiing, fishing and sailing paradise.

MARTINBOROUGH

MARTINBOROUGH

World renowned Pinot Noirs bring many visitors here, but this area also produces wonderful local foods. This bounty is exploited by the many eateries, and celebrated at its annual wine and food festival. Walking off lunch is easy with leisurely strolls or bike rides around the local vineyards & olive groves. Feeling more adventurous? There’s jet boating, quad biking, horse riding, kayaking, treks through the Putangirua Pinnacles and into the Haurangi Forest Park or Tora and White Rock’s remote beaches to explore. On a clear day at Cape Palliser you’ll see all the way to the South Island. If time allows, visit the Seal Colony or climb the lighthouse’s 200-plus steps.

MILFORD SOUND

MILFORD SOUND

Not to mention the mighty Mitre Peak, which dominates the skyline. MOUNT COOK

MOUNT COOK

Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. Lying in the Southern Alps range, it’s a serenely beautiful year-round resort. Whether you’re attracted by the glacier skiing in the winter, or the hiking, boat trips and fishing in the summer, there’s only one place to stay: The Hermitage Alpine Resort. An icon of superior accommodation and dining for over a century, it continues this tradition today with a high quality range of facilities available for all occasions.

MOUNT COOK SKI PLANES

MOUNT COOK SKI PLANES

Mount Cook Ski Planes can take you to an ice heaven, normally only accessible after hours of climbing. From Mount Cook Airport or Franz Josef, you’ll fly towards Aoraki and on to the Tasman Glacier, where the pilot will land the plane on its skis. The engine is stilled and so will you be as you get out and hear the deafening silence. The return flight is down the other side of the valley past climber huts, icefalls, peaks, and occasional ski tourers and climbers.

NAPIER

NAPIER

Napier’s variety of 1930’s architecture is almost unrivalled: Stripped Classical and Spanish Mission and especially Art Deco are all in evidence. Almost continual sunshine makes ocean spa hot pools and the swimming complex well worth a visit. So is the National Aquarium and the dolphins and seals of Marineland. A chilled glass of Sauvignon, on Marine Parade, whilst staring across the Pacific towards Cape Kidnappers and the world’s largest gannet colony is also recommended.

NELSON & BLENHEIM

NELSON & BLENHEIM

Whilst Nelson offers a diversity in landscape – snow-capped mountains, rolling vineyards, golden beaches – all offering a wide array of outdoor activities and adventures.

NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH

NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH

Marlborough’s mist hazed hills and crystal clear waters of its ‘Sounds’ make it a fishing, boating, hiking and mountain biking haven. Nelson, famed for its arts and crafts, fine dining and excellent wines, leads to the Abel Tasman National Park, whose coastal track along golden sand beaches is a stunning walk.

NORTH ISLAND

NORTH ISLAND

The smallest of the two main islands that make up New Zealand, North Island is home to a staggeringly rich diversity of landscapes and highlights, from the subtropical beauty of Northland and the spectacular aquatic pleasures of the Bay of Islands, to the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Ruapehu and Mount Taranaki. Around the Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and the breathtaking Coromandel Peninsula you can find glorious beaches, unspoilt coastline and picturesque harbours, whilst the Waikato region is blessed with underground caverns and the Waitomo Caves. The landscapes around Rotorua, the traditional heartland of the Maori culture, bubble with geothermal activity and spouting geysers and the air is infused with the unique scent of sulphur. City life is as eclectic as the natural diversity, from the bustling vibrancy of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, and the engaging charms of Wellington, its captivating capital, to the Art Deco style of Napier on the east coast. With culture and natural beauty in abundance, idyllic retreats to relax in and some of the finest vineyards in the Southern Hemisphere, the North Island is indeed a land of plenty.

QUEENSTOWN

QUEENSTOWN

Located by the majestic Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown offers superb wining and dining and outdoor adventure in the most beautiful Hollywood-perfect scenery imaginable. So good in fact, that this was where much of The Lord of the Rings was filmed. Whether you ride, walk, fly or sail, the wildlife, waterfalls, valleys, clear lakes, and mountainscapes of Queenstown will absolutely overwhelm you with their unspoilt magnificence.

ROTORUA

ROTORUA

Rotorua, with its cobbled, lantern lined street ways and striking Tudor architecture shows off New Zealand’s significant colonial history. But it is the geysers, boiling mud pools and steaming craters that have made it so popular a destination, especially for therapy lovers. If that’s you, then merely mentioning the 26 hot mineral bathing pools and extensive range of treatments at Polynesian Spa should be starting to engender a warm feeling for this special part of the North Island. Take a float plane to see the surrounding volcanoes, lakes and the areas of outstanding natural beauty, also a great base for hiking and bird watching. While closer to home you’re never far from Maori culture in the form of concerts, traditional singing and frequent performances of their legendary dances.

SAILING

SAILING

Experience the world of the billionaire and elite yacht racer, aboard NZL 40 and NZL 41 – two incredibly powerful yachts that have competed in The America’s Cup! Either take the helm, heave into the grinders or simply sit back, hold on and enjoy the ride as you power through the waves of Auckland harbour. The boats have changed little since their racing day specification to provide an authentic and truly awesome experience.

SOUTH ISLAND

SOUTH ISLAND

The 12th largest island on the planet and less populated than its northern neighbour, New Zealand’s South Island is no less spectacular. Its western coast is lined with the towering peaks of the Southern Alps, where dramatic glaciers and surreal limestone landscapes, lush rainforests and rugged coastlines echo still to the legends of Maori folklore. Fjordland on the southern edge of the island presents visitors with some of the most breathtaking scenery in the whole country, a fact that has earned it World Heritage status and the title of the ‘Sightseeing and Walking Capital of the World’. The Marlborough region is blessed with the highest sunshine in New Zealand and a staggering array of wineries, whilst the offshore waterways of Marlborough Sounds are a rich haven for a spectacular diversity of bird and sea life. The rich seas off the Kaikoura Peninsula present some of the best whale watching waters in the world and those hankering for excitement should head for Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, the country’s adventure capital. The island also boast the country’s oldest city, Dunedin and one of its most beautiful, Christchurch.

THE TRANZALPINE

THE TRANZALPINE

Journeying from one coast of the South Island to the other, the TranzAlpine is a truly stupendous way to take in New Zealand’s famous scenery. Leaving from Christchurch (you can start at the other end if you prefer) you flash through the Canterbury Plains and farmlands, into the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. A climb into the Southern Alps is next before the descent through lush beech rainforest into the West Coast town of Greymouth. Every carriage offers amazing views but, to get much ‘closer’, there’s an open air viewing carriage which is the perfect platform for the countless photo opportunities. The journey is 224 kilometres, takes 4 ½ hours and includes 16 tunnels and 5 viaducts plus the 73 metre Staircase.

THERMAL ROTORUA AND LAKE TAUPO

THERMAL ROTORUA AND LAKE TAUPO

This unique region has much to offer: from snow capped mountains, to pristine native bush and the famous Huka Falls, to gushing geysers and bubbling mud pools. Other highlights include Mount Tarawera, Whakarewarewa Forest, Ohinemutu and, not to be missed, is a traditional Maori cultural evening with a feast cooked on hot stones in a Hangi earth oven. But most impressive is Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest fresh water lake with scenic views to the volcanic peaks of Tongariro. White Island, New Zealand’s most active volcano, is 50 km from the coast and constantly emits a steam stack and occasionally erupts – it’s best seen from a helicopter which can be arranged from Rotorua.

WALKING & TREKKING

WALKING & TREKKING

The wild beauty at the top of the South Island is really appreciated on a three day walking tour of The Queen Charlotte Track; 71km of stunning views, contrasting landscapes, historical landmarks and varied wildlife. With more time there’s fishing, sailing, sea kayaking, mountain biking, bird watching, diving, historic side trips and some great restaurants to enjoy.

WANAKA

WANAKA

Lake Wanaka and its sister, Lake Hawea, are two crystal clear, scenically perfect, glacially created bodies of water in the centre of towering alps. Discover just how beautiful they are by paragliding over the hills, see them from a plane, mountain biking the high trails, walking the myriad tracks, or, if it’s winter, skiing the superb Alpine slopes. Wine buffs will also love Martinborough’s famous wineries all within a short drive of the city!

WEST COAST

WEST COAST

The West Coast is memorable for its bizarre limestone landscapes, mysterious lakes and raging rivers, primal rainforest and magnificent, wild coastline. It also features Aoraki (Mount Cook) – New Zealand’s highest mountain – and the huge ice valleys of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, into which you can fly on a ski plane and land on the top

WHALE WATCHING

WHALE WATCHING

For a closer view of the whales take a cruise.
