Hernan Cortes and his conquistadores overran the mighty Aztec civilization in the early
16th century. For the next 300 years Mexico was ruled by the Spanish and the colonial
legacy is evident throughout the land. Many itineraries to Mexico are concentrated
to the east of the capital, but the central region is little-visited in spite of having some
fantastic colonial cities. San Miguel de Allende is one of the most picturesque cities
and is declared a National Monument. Guanajuato is another gem with its narrow
streets that seem to belong to a bygone era, which was founded in 1559 and grew
rich from the silver found in abundance in the surrounding hills. The ornate churches
