BLUE MOUNTAINS, HUNTER VALLEY & PORT STEPHENS
BLUE MOUNTAINS, HUNTER VALLEY & PORT STEPHENS
Taking in some of the natural highlights of New South Wales, this 5 day itinerary from Sydney affords an opportunity to discover the spectacular scenic majesty of the Blue Mountains, sample delicious wines in the picturesque vineyards of the Hunter Valley and spot bottlenose dolphins in the clear waters off Port Stephens.
Day 1
Collect your rental car from Hertz Australia, Sydney City depot.
Drive to the Blue Mountains (approximately 125 km). The Blue Mountains derive their name from the ever-present blue haze created by the sun's rays striking the minuscule droplets of eucalyptus oil evaporating from the leaves of the dense forests that cover their slopes. Once believed insurmountable by the early colonists and spanning over a million hectares, the Blue Mountains are famed for their breathtaking scenery, with cascading waterfalls tumbling into sheer canyons, towering rainforests and craggy peaks that rise up to dominate the landscapes to the west of Sydney. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure. Stay overnight at Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort & Spa in an executive suite.
Day 2
Travel today through the historic town of Katoomba, the largest in the region, and then on through Blackheath, Bell and Bilpin towards the fertile landscapes of the Hunter Valley. Proceed to the Peppers Guesthouse where you will stay two nights in a classic room. This drive is approximately 250 km.(B)
Day 3
A full day at your leisure to explore the Hunter Valley at your own pace, enjoying the rich mix of colonial grace, rural charm and, of course, wine. The first vines were brought to the region in the 1820's and the Hunter Valley is renowned as one of Australia's more scenic wine growing areas, with the Hunter River winding its way lazily through the grapevine clad hills. Famed for the production of top quality world-class table wines, the Valley has a staggering abundance of wineries, ranging from very large commercial estates, to the smaller boutique style wineries. There are almost 150 wineries in this area, including the renowned Tyrells, Draytons and Lindemans.
Day 4
Depart the Hunter Valley and travel to Port Stephens. Stay one night at the Peppers Anchorage in an Anchorage Room. This drive is approximately 95 km.
Port Stephens is a vast bay consisting of a series of idyllic seaside villages scattered along a crystal clear waterway overlooking the glittering waters of the Pacific Ocean. Famous for its natural unspoilt beauty, the area is known locally as the ‘Blue Water Paradise’ and presents some idyllic spots for swimming and fishing. Commonly referred to as the ‘Dolphin Capital of Australia’, Port Stephens is best known for its resident population of over 140 bottlenose dolphins that play amongst the clear waters of the bay. The best way to see the pods of these playful creatures is on one of the many cruises that depart Nelson Bay daily, presenting, in many cases, a unique opportunity to swim with these remarkable creatures all year round.
Day 5
Commence your return journey to Sydney, rejoining the Pacific Highway and travelling south along the National Freeway back to the city. Make your way back to Hertz Sydney city depot or Sydney airport to return your vehicle. This drive is approximately 205 km.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD
GREAT OCEAN ROAD
Discover for yourself why the Great Ocean Road is so famous as you drive through epic coastal scenery, lush rainforests, quaint coastal resorts and majestic sights landmarks like the Twelve Apostles.
This 6 day itinerary allows you to appreciate the region’s beauty as you drive from Melbourne to Adelaide.
Day 1
Proceed to the Hertz Australia depot to collect your rental vehicle. Depart Melbourne and head south west, travelling along the Princess Freeway towards Geelong, where you will join the Surf Coast Highway towards the Torquay, the official start of the Great Ocean Road. One of Australia’s most spectacular stretches of highway, the Great Ocean Road runs along Victoria’s western coast, sandwiched between the glorious Otway Ranges and the glittering waters of the Southern Ocean. You might want to consider making a short detour to the surfing mecca of Bells Beach, to take in its stunning coastal views, before continuing through the scenic coastal towns of Angelsea and Lorne en route to the picturesque fishing port of Apollo Bay. Make your way to Captains at the Bay for an overnight stay in a double terrace room. The drive is approximately 210 Km.
Day 2
This morning you may wish to enjoy a stroll through some of the magnificent coastal rainforest. Alternatively, you may wish to make a small detour off the Great Ocean Road and travel through the Otway National Park to nearby Cape Otway, the most southerly point on the Great Ocean Road and an infamously treacherous stretch of coastline.
Depart Apollo Bay later this morning and continue along the Great Ocean Road, passing through Port Campbell and the Port Campbell National Park, taking in some of this stretch of the coast’s most magnificent scenery, including ‘London Bridge’, ‘The Arch’ and the iconic and world renowned ‘Twelve Apostles’, giant rock stacks of immense grandeur that rise out of the waters of the Southern Ocean. Just before you reach the beautifully located and historic town of Warnambool, the Great Ocean Road ends and you will join the Princes Highway for the short drive on to the charming fishing village of Port Fairy, a town steeped in the rich history of whalers and seal fishermen. Today’s drive is approximately 195 km via the Great Ocean Road. Stay overnight at the Oscars Waterfront Boutique Hotel, in a premium room. (B)
Day 3
Depart Port Fairy and drive through Hamilton. You may wish to make a stop here to visit the Art Gallery, considered by many top be one of Australia's leading provincial galleries and filled with a collection of Hogarth engravings and 18th century watercolours by Paul Sandy. Leaving Hamilton, continue through Cavendish to reach the small farming community of Glenisla, and your accommodation at Glenisla Homestead, where you will stay two nights. This drive is approximately 109 km. (B,D)
Day 4
Today is at leisure for you to relax and enjoy the activities available on the homestead, and to explore the rugged beauty of the Grampians. Dominating the flat plains of Victoria’s farmland, the surreal rock formations and barren sandstone ridges of the Grampians have been described as Australia’s accessible wilderness and its myriad of waterfalls, lakes, tall forests and captivating alpine-like landscapes make the Grampians National Park an entire world in itself. This diversity of natural splendour consists of four main ranges: Mt William, Serra, Mt Difficult and the Victoria Range, which together form the serrated, undulating and canyoned array of one of the most outstanding natural protrusions in Australia and a very impressive finish to the Great Dividing Range.
The park has a good network of bushwalking trails and paths to discover, and its excellent system of scenic roads makes it ideal for exploring by car as well. Enjoy the views from Boroka Lookout and visit the town of Halls Gap where there is an informative National Park Visitor Centre. In the town of Brambuk you can find the fascinating Aboriginal Living Cultural Centre, which brings the history and culture of local Koorie Aborigines to life, including a photographic history of the area’s original inhabitants. To the west are two of the most spectacular sights of the entire ranges, the rock formation known as the Balconies, which affords some spectacular views across the Victoria Valley, and the majestic cascades of the thundering MacKenzie Falls. (B & D)
DAY 5
Depart Glenisla this morning and continue driving through Balmoral, Harrow & Edenhope, crossing the Victoria/South Australia border and continuing on to Naracoorte, situated in the heart of the limestone coast region of South Australia. You might like a short detour to see Naracoorte National Park. Wind movement over millions of years has shaped the caves here. Only a few of the 60 or so known caves are accessible; there are guided tours into Blanche Cave and Alexandria Cave. Here you can see beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites. This detour is approximately 30 km return to Naracoorte.
Departing Naracoorte, travel northwest on the Keith Highway to reach Padthaway, and your overnight accommodation at Padthaway Estate. The drive today, without any detours is approximately 220 km. (B)
DAY 6
Your final day sees you depart Padthaway and continue your journey west, towards the gracious and distinctly ‘European’ city of Adelaide, lying along the banks of the Torrens River. You may drop off your rental car either at the Adelaide Depot or Adelaide Airport. The drive today is approximately 410 km. (B)
