Pink Flamingo

Pink Flamingos arrive at Lake Nakuru - Kenya

During February Lake Nakuru National Park witnesses the arrival of hundreds of thousand of pink flamingos. Situated within the eastern Rift Valley of equatorial Africa, this shallow, alkaline lake is famously home to the breathtaking spectacle of the thousands of flamingos that flock to its rich waters, turning the lake into a blaze of dazzling colour. A pulsing pink swathe of life that carpets the water, the flamingo are a breathtaking sight. The lake has become world famous for these birds, who visit the lake to feed on algae that forms on the lake bed. They move back and forth, feeding and occasionally and spectacularly taking to flight, filling the sky over the lake with colour. But Nakuru, which was established as Africa’s first ever bird sanctuary in 1960, can also boast a spectacular concentration of other wildlife, including black and white rhino, leopard, the endangered Rothschild giraffe, lion and nearly 500 species of birds, including pelican, cape teal, tawny eagle and African fish eagle.

Endless Wave, Brazil

Surfers should head to Sao Domingos Do Capim at the mouth of Brazil’s Amazon to catch the ‘endless wave’ of the pororoca. This the 4m-high Atlantic tidal bore sweeps up the river each February and March. This phenomenon develops when the strengthened Atlantic Ocean tide advances into the river basin, creating a giant swell that flows upstream for several hundred miles. For the adventurous water levels are near their highest in March and April and the waves, which appear every 12 hours, are at their most challenging.

Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel Festival - Egypt

The gigantic façade of Ramses II temple represents four colossal seated figures of Ramses. The façade is 119 feet wide, 100 feet high, and the statues are each 67 feet high. The façade door leads to the interior of the temple is a 185 feet long man-made rock cave that leads to a series of halls and rooms. The most remarkable feature of the temple of Abu Simbel is that the construction is oriented in a way that twice a year (February 22nd and October 22nd), the morning sun rays shine through the length of the inner temple cave and illuminate the statues of the four gods seated at the end of the cave. Interestingly, when the Temple of Ramses II was relocated to its new location at Abu Simbel back in the 1960’s the actual dates of the ascension were slightly displaced by a day and originally took place on February 21st and October 21st. These dates are believed to have been the ascension of Ramses II to the throne and his actual birthday, although there is no evidence to support this.
