Classic India – Diwali Festival

Day 1- Depart London Heathrow on Virgin Atlantic non-stop direct flight to Delhi.

Depart London Heathrow on Virgin Atlantic non-stop direct flight to Delhi (8 hours 15 minutes).

Day 2- On arrival in Delhi transfer to The Maidens Hotel.

Arriving in Delhi transfer to the Maidens Hotel (2 nights in a superior room) for a chance to relax and freshen up before an afternoon tour exploring the highlights of Old Delhi. The political and cultural capital of the Mughal emperor Shan Jahan during the 17th century, Delhi is filled with the eclectic mix of grandeur and vibrancy so beloved of Indian cities. The tour of Old Delhi by rickshaw takes in some of its historic treasures, including the Red Fort and Jama Masjid as well as the vibrant narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk and its colourful bazaars and eateries.

Day 3- Morning and afternoon tour of the capital.

Morning tour of New Delhi, where India’s colonial and Moghul past sit in splendid proximity to the bustling markets at Delhi’s vibrant heart. Sightseeing includes some of the architectural delights of New Delhi, originally created for the British Raj during the 1930s. Much of the city’s colonial grandeur can be attributed to the talents of Sir Edwin Lutyens, the British architect who, over a period of some 20 years, created such architectural gems as the India Gate, the Rashtrapati Bhavan (once the home of the Viceroy of India) and the private gardens in which the palace now stands. This sightseeing tour of New Delhi visits Qutab Minar, built during the 13th century to herald the arrival of the Muslim sultans, Humayun’s Tomb as well as India Gate, Parliament House and President House. Afternoon optional tour of Haus Khas starting with a visit to an Oriya temple at prayer time with the air rich with the smell of incense. The village walk through Haus Khas is a myriad of antique shops, silver jewellery, cottage arts and some wonderful local characters. There is ample time to stop for a snack at a local eatery specialising in south Indian cuisine. Afternoon is at leisure.

Day 4- Fly to Varanasi on the Holy Ganges

Flying to Varanasi this morning (1 hour 10 minutes) transfer to The Gateway Hotel Ganges on arrival for an overnight stay (standard room). Located on the banks of the mighty Ganges, the holy city of Varanasi, one of the oldest in India, embodies much of the myth and culture of Hinduism and has been a centre for the worship of Shiva for over 1,200 years. Many believe that this is the site where the spiritual and material worlds collide, affording it a mystic property that is enhanced by the countless thousands of devotees who journey here to bathe in the sacred waters of the River Ganges. This afternoon there is the option to visit the sacred Buddhist site of Sarnath, one of the most revered settings on earth, where the lord Buddha preached his first sermon. In the evening attend a memorable aarti ceremony on the banks of the river. The beautiful ceremony involves rituals performed by several priests, to the sound of bells, drums, cymbals, and Sanskrit mantras. Your understanding of Hinduism and the worship of the River Ganges will become much clearer after the ceremony and is not to be missed

Day 5- Sightseeing in Varanasi and Khajuraho

A spectacular early morning boat ride along the sacred Ganges past some of the numerous ghats that line the banks, including some that are used specifically for public cremations. Later transfer to the airport for a flight to Khajuraho (40 minutes) and an overnight stay at the Hotel Chandela (superior garden view room). This afternoon we will enjoy a sightseeing tour of its remarkable medieval temples, graced with some of the most exquisite sculptures in the country. Khajuraho is rightly considered to be one of India’s most captivating settings, home to a number of Chandela Dynasty buildings that represent some of the finest temple architecture anywhere on earth. Filled with erotic imagery and masterful carvings, each of the temples are dedicated to a different deity, with the two most famous being devoted to Shiva and Vishnu.

Day 6- Visit the magnificent Fort Palace in Orcha

Travel to Orchha (170 km/approximately 4 hours), once the capital of the Bundela kings of the 16th and 17th centuries and spend time visiting some of its majestic monuments. The city is home to the spectacular Fort Palace, which includes the Jehangir Mahal and the fabulous religious murals of the Raj Mahal. From here continue to Jhansi (16 km/approximately 30 minutes) and then by train (executive class) to Agra (217 km/ approximately 2½ hours). Two nights in Agra is at The Gateway Hotel on Fatehabad Road (standard room).

Day 7- Visit the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra

Agra was once the capital city of the mighty Mughals and much of its majesty can be attributed to the vision and power of Akbar the Great and his grandson, Shan Jahan. This morning visit three of India’s most spectacular buildings, the Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), the imposing sandstone edifice of Agra Fort and the magnificent marble splendour of the Taj Mahal, said to represent the epoch of Moghul architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort is liberally blessed with a dazzling array of palaces and mosques, whilst the marble magnificence of the Taj Mahal needs no introduction. Built by Shah Jahan to honour the memory of his wife, Mumtaz, the Taj is one of the world’s most iconic buildings, taking over 20 years to build and costing in excess of 3 million rupees. This evening there will be the option of returning to enjoy the magical sight of the Taj basking in the glow of the setting sun. Cross the Yamuna River for a heritage trail journey to take you away from the tourist trail. A walk along a narrow bridle path through agricultural fields takes you to the ancient village of Kachhpura. with the opportunity to see village life. The trail ends at Mehtab Bagh from where you can witness the sunset over the Taj Mahal.

Day 8- Explore the deserted sandstone city of Fatehpur Sikri en route to Jaipur

Leave Agra this morning and first drive to the deserted sandstone city of Fatehpur Sikri, built by Akbar the Great and abandoned on the emperor’s death. Continue the drive to visit one of the most amazing sites of this tour. The small village of Abhaneri has one of India's deepest and largest step wells (or “baolis”). Step wells are unique to India. They were used as cool places of resort, as pools for ritual cleansing before a temple visit and as a water supply for dry weather. After a lunch break continue your journey to Jaipur, the 18th century capital of Rajasthan (233 km/full day with stops). This wonderful ‘Pink City’ is an eclectic mix of styles and influences and considered to be one of the best planned in the country, built as it is around the principles of Hindu architectural theory. In Jaipur stay 3 nights at the Jai Mahal Palace (luxury room).

Day 9- Visit the Palace of the Winds and Amber Fort

The first stop today is at the extraordinary façade of the Hawa Mahal, the ‘Palace of the Winds’, built as part of the City Palace and intended to allow the women of the harem to view the city below without being seen. From here continue to Amber, for a jeep ride to the hill-top palace of the Rajput rulers, a rich mix of Hindu and Muslim design that offer some spectacular views out across the Aravalli Hills. This afternoon visit the magnificent Maharajah’s Palace, now a fascinating museum housing some of the treasures of Jaipur’s princely past. In the evening there is the option of a walking tour of Jaipur’s vibrant bazaar which is a haven for all manner of local artisans from jewellers to gold painters and tie dying experts. A visit to a local resident in his beautifully decorated private haveli is a fascinating highlight.

Day 10- Diwali – experience the Festival of Lights (Diwali).

Diwali – experience the Festival of Lights (Diwali). Very different to Holi, the festival of Diwali is the time when Indian put on their best new clothes and exchange gifts. Many of the shops in Jaipur will be lit up and fireworks are plentiful in the evening. Two optional walking tours are offered – one early in the morning and the other in the evening. You can choose to do one or both of the walks and there is plenty of time to relax in between. The walks have been uniquely designed for Bales and offer genuinely interactive experiences getting to meet the residents and as a result gain an insight into traditional ways of life. If you do not wish to take part in our recommended tours then there is the option to spend the day at leisure to relax at the hotel or explore Jaipur on your own accord.

Day 11- Overnight at Deogarh Mahal

Leaving Jaipur head into the cooler highlands of rural Rajasthan, towards the wooded principality of Deogarh (275 km/approximately 6 hours). Overnight at Deogarh Mahal (deluxe room), a 17th century converted palace set high in the Aravalli Mountains. The town adjacent to the Deogarh palace is a delightful, photogenic place to enjoy without the hassle from merchants experienced in many other towns.

Day 12- Head to the lakeside city of Udaipur

Head towards the magnificent lakeside city of Udaipur (195 km/4 hours), the Venice of the east and considered by many the most romantic city in Rajasthan. En route, stop at the Jain temple of Ranakpur, the largest of its kind in India and one of the most important Jain sites anywhere in the country, whose marble elegance matches anything in Asia. In Udaipur, spend 2 nights at the Trident Udaipur (deluxe garden view room)

Day 13- Visit Udaipur's City Lake Palace

Founded in the 16th century, Udaipur is set before a magnificent backdrop of lakes and hills, presenting an idyllic location for the sumptuous palaces of the Rajput princes. This morning visit the spectacular City Palace, a truly opulent repository containing many of the city’s most prized artistic treasures. Enjoy a rickshaw ride from the City Palace to Sahelion ki Bari through the Old City. This afternoon there is the option to take a cruise on Lake Pichola affords the perfect setting to enjoy the romance and beauty of this ‘City of Dreams’ and take in the palaces, gardens and temples that are amongst the finest in all India

Day 14- Return flight

Jet Airways flight to Delhi to connect with Virgin Atlantic flight to London Heathrow, arriving later today (9 hours 40 minutes).

Maidens Hotel

The Maidens Hotel, Delhi, is located in a residential area of Old Delhi approximately 25 minutes drive from Connaught Place, the main shopping centre of New Delhi, and 50 minutes' drive from the airport. It is an older style property built in colonial days, hence its stately appearance and atmosphere. It is set in eight acres of gardens with a pleasant swimming pool area and tennis courts amid large shady trees and bougainvillaea. The hotel has 53 rooms, a coffee shop, a main dining room and a small bar.

The Gateway Hotel Ganges

The Gateway Hotel Ganges in Varanasi is centrally located and set amidst 12 acres of grounds. The town is great for exploring on foot

Trident Udaipur

The Trident Hotel is located on the banks of the picturesque Pichola Lake and is 10 minutes away from Udaipur city centre. Guests can reach the hotel directly or arrive at Dudh Talai Jetty for a complimentary boat transfer across the lake. The 143 rooms are all elegantly furnished and overlooking the landscaped gardens.
