Taj Mahal
The world's greatest and possibly most extravagant monument to love is the iconic Taj Mahal. Completed by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653, in memory of his late wife, its marble facades, intricate carvings and semi-precious stones bewitch all who gaze upon her. Costing in excess of 3 million rupees, it took over 20 years to build. Sunrise is a particularly magical time to visit when the marble transforms its hues from gold to pink and red in the changing light. The rooftop terraces in Taj Ganj offer a mesmerising view of the Taj in the moonlight as does Mehtab Bagh.

Varanasi
One of the oldest cities in the world, Varanasi is steeped in Hindu mythology. Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, its numerous bathing ghats (steps) on the banks of the Ganges are a magnet for devotees. Our recommended hotel is the Nadesar Palace.

Festival
India is a country that loves its festivals, its fairs and celebrations. These provide a unique insight into Indian life, with Holi (March) and Diwali (October) being 2 of its most important.

Khajuraho Temple
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Khajuraho is home to the largest collection of Jain and Hindu temples in the country. Spanning 3 centuries, these incredible structures embody the pinnacle of the Chandela dynasty and are famed for their remarkable erotic sculptures.

Lake Pichola
Called the ‘Venice of the East’ and the ‘City of Lakes’, Udaipur is probably Rajasthan’s most romantic and elegant city, a breathtaking collection of palaces, temples and gardens that evoke the true majesty of Rajasthan’s golden age. Surrounded by lakes, forests and the dominating slopes of the Arvalli Hills, Udaipur’s luxurious hotels are worth considering for an extended stay at the end of a hectic touring holiday and avoids a further flight to the coast

Amber Fort
The Amber Fort set in picturesque and rugged hills is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Constructed by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and completed by Mirja Raja Jai Singh the fort was made in red sand stone and white marble. The rugged forbidding exterior belies an inner paradise with a beautiful fusion of art and architecture. Amber is the classic and romantic fort-palace with a magnificent aura. The interior wall of the palace depicts expressive painting scenes with carvings, precious stones and mirror settings. In the foreground is the Maota Lake providing a breathtaking vista

Palace of the Winds
The poet king Sawai Pratap Singh built this palace of winds. This is easily the most well-known landmarks of Jaipur and is also its icon. Located in the City Palace complex, it is best viewed from the road outside. This five-storey building overlooking the busy bazaar street is a fascinating example of Rajput architecture and artistry with its delicately honeycombed 953 pink sandstone windows known as 'jharokhas'. It was originally built for the ladies of the royal household to watch everyday life and processions in the city from their veiled comfort

Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri occupies a rocky crest some 40 kilometres to the south-west of Agra. A UNESCO World Heritage site and once the imperial capital of Akbar the Great, the city’s wonderfully preserved collection of monuments provide a remarkable insight into the daily life of the 16th century Mughal court.

Sightseeing includes some of the architectural delights of New Delhi, originally created for the British Raj during the 1930s. Much of the city’s colonial grandeur can be attributed to the talents of Edward Lutyens, the British architect who, over a period of some 20 years, created such architectural gems as the India Gate, the Rashtrapati Bhavan (once the home of the Viceroy of India) and the private gardens in which the palace now stands.

Located on the banks of the mighty Ganges, the holy city of Varanasi, one of the oldest in India, embodies much of the myth and culture of Hinduism and has been a centre for the worship of Shiva for over 1,200 years. Many believe that this is the site where the spiritual and material worlds collide, affording it a mystic property that is enhanced by the countless thousands of devotees who journey here to bathe in the scared waters of the River Ganges. This afternoon there is the option to visit the sacred Buddhist site of Sarnath, one of the most revered settings on earth, where the lord Buddha preached his first sermon. In the evening attend a memorable aarti ceremony on the banks of the river. The beautiful ceremony involves rituals performed by several priests, to the sound of bells, drums, cymbals, and Sanskrit mantras. Your understanding of Hinduism and the worship of the River Ganges will become much clearer after the ceremony and is not to be missed.
