There are believed to be over 200 volcanic formations across the country, of which Irazu and Arenal are certainly the most famous. FONDA VELA HOTEL MONTEVERDE

The Fonda Vela Hotel is located in a gorgeous cloud forest. There are 9 buildings nestled in the landscaped property, designed with natural light, privacy and warmth. All have large windows with views of the forest. The 20 junior suites have a small refrigerator, table, king and queen-size beds and comfortable sofa. PACHIRA LODGE TORTUGUERO

The Pachira Lodge is located only 5 minutes from the Tortuguero National Park and opposite the main ‘canal’ facing the town of Tortuguero. Surrounded by a network of scenic canals, this is considered one of the most exotic regions of the world, characterized by its abundant flora and fauna. The 34 rooms at the lodge have hot water, private bathroom, ceiling fans and two double beds. There is also a bar/restaurant within the grounds and a swimming pool.....

CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK

This park has been called ‘The Amazon of Costa Rica’, a large primary forest on a Pacific coastline protecting more than 400 species of birds (20 are endemic), 116 of amphibians and reptiles, and 139 of mammals – representing 10 percent of the mammals in the Americas. Its healthy population of scarlet macaws (about 1,200 birds) is the largest concentration in Central America. The park also supports a healthy population of big cats and crocodiles.....

EL JARDIN DEL EDEN TAMARINDO BEACH

FLORA AND FAUNA

Biologically Costa Rica is one of the richest countries on earth, boasting a huge diversity of flora and fauna. With 9,000 species of plants, 850 recorded species of birds, over 200 mammals and nearly 400 species of reptiles, this tiny land accounts for about 6% of the planet’s plant and animal species. A dozen ecosystems harbour some of the world’s rarest species, from scarlet macaws and manatees, to leatherback turtles and the resplendent quetzal.....

OSA PENINSULA

Occupying the southwest corner, the Osa Peninsula is unique even amongst the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica’s spectacular natural treasures. You can travel from the Caribbean Coast to the Pacific Coast in the same day and in that time you can pass tropical rainforests, cloud forests, active volcanoes, rivers and waterfalls, banana and pineapple plantations, alpine like countryside, coffee fields and idyllic beaches. In the province of Guanacaste, the Pacific coast offers many gorgeous beaches but we discovered a gem of a beach called Playa Hermosa which has a peaceful fishing village feel to it and is frequented mainly by Costa Ricans rather than international tourists. It’s a very romantic beach and the sunsets are beautiful there too. I spent a lot of time there doing very little and it was perfect! In fact I think I could stay there forever! - Neil Carpenter
