BUMTHANG CULTURAL TREK

For the more energetic traveller who is happy to spend a couple of nights under canvas, this excellent three-day trek passes through several villages on its meandering route through Bumthang countryside, and provides an exceptional opportunity for contact with Bhutanese rural life. The Bumthang Valley is the religious heartland of Bhutan, and is home to some of its oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries. The trek is recommended from March to May and then again from September to November and the walking can be described as moderate, averaging about 5 to 6 hours each day.A rewarding experience which will take you though forests of sycamore and birch, across broad meadows and pastures, and alongside pristine mountain streams.....

THE UMA PARO

The Uma in Paro opened its doors at the end of 2004 and brings a new level of luxury and comfort to Bhutan. The hotel is located on a 38-acre site atop a tree-clad hill, close to the town of Paro. There are 29 spacious rooms and suites in total, featuring large bathrooms with separate shower, DVD player, heated towel rack,minibar and in-room yoga mats. AMANKORA PARO

Amankora Paro

The suites feature natural rammed-earth walls, gently sloping roofs and wood-paneled interiors with a king-size bed, a traditional bukhari wood-burning stove and a large terrazzo-clad bath. The views take in Drukyel Dzong and stretch to 7,300m high, snow-capped Jhomolhari and beyond.....

Amankora Thimpu

Amankora Thimphu is a quiet retreat. The dzong-like architecture incorporates stone, white washed buildings and traditional wood burning “bukhari” stoves. A flagstone outdoor dining deck offers views of blue pine forests....

Amankora Gangtey

Amankora Gangtey offers an open plan bedroom and bathing area. The aesthetics combine wood panelling and chocolate brown walls, the traditional bukhari, terrazzo-clad bath, shower and vanity, and day bed offering views across the valley. Suites are individually heated during the cold winter months.....

Amankora Punakha

Amankora Punakha is surrounded by orchards of tropical fruit and paddy fields. Flanked by the Mo Chu river, access, via a suspension bridge decked with fluttering prayer flags, is a short drive through rural pastures. There are eight suites with views of the valley and the Punakha Dzong (monastery) in the distance. Days spent here are relaxed and indulgent - following a hiking trail, relaxing in the spa with sauna, steam, massage and meditation or gently floating down the river. ....

Amankora Gangtey

Offering sweeping views of the valley from the comfort of the spacious dining area Amankora Gangtey offers eight suites with an open plan bedroom and bathing area, furnished with wood panelling and chocolate brown walls, traditional bukhari wood-burning stove, and day bed offering views across the valley. The combined living and dining room is appointed with cosy chairs and sofas and family style dining tables, providing views through floor to ceiling windows of the valley and surrounding mountains. Located in Balakha Village, 20 minutes from Paro Airport, Amankora Paro offers 24 luxurious suites featuring natural rammed-earth walls, gently sloping roofs and wood-panelled interiors with a king-size bed and a traditional bukhari wood-burning stove. The suites feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows opening onto a meadow of blue pines with the Drukgyel Dzong (monastery) and the snow peak of Jhomolhari providing a beautiful backdrop. The dining room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and specialises in Indian, Western and Bhutanese dishes. The spa offers a series of treatments to allow guests to unwind and harmonise with the serene Himalayan surroundings.....

Amankora Punakha

Located east of the Dochu Pass the Amankora Punakha is reached by crossing a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu (Mother River). The lodge includes a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse built as a residence by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, which now houses the dining room and intimate relaxation areas. There is a courtyard for outdoor dining, a tea pavilion and meditation room, with views on the surrounding rice terraces. The eight suites are identical in design to the Amankora Paro.....

Amankora Thimphu

The Amankora Thimphu is set in a blue pine forest in the upper reaches of the Motithang area of the adjacent Thimphu Valley. The 16 suite property is close to the capital's sights whilst remaining a quiet retreat. The dzong like architecture incorporates high stone white-washed buildings, with dramatic soaring ceilings and wood-panelled walls. The Spa features three treatment rooms and the suites feature wood panel walls, a king-size bed, reading chair, a spacious bathroom with a terrazzo-clad bath with a view of the pine forest.....

Directions from Dorking BR Station:

Turn left at the main road (A24) and take a right into London Road as you reach the Esso garage, bringing you to the High Street. Turn right and continue onto South Street at a Y junction that is the start of the one way system. Junction road is on the right hand side, past Waitrose. The walk will take about 15 minutes. Alternatively take a taxi from the station and the fare is around £4.00.
