Rice paddy

Lying amongst the central mountains of Bali, Ubud is an oasis of creativity and culture. Its lush hills and rice terraces surround a town filled with museums, galleries and Balinese dance schools. You can enjoy relaxing village cycle rides, Ramayana ballet and some of the finest art anywhere in the archipelago.

Back

Beaches

n Bali, idyllic palm-fringed beaches are the norm. The clear, warm water is great for swimming and snorkelling. Take a day trip to the island of Nusa Penida, where the startlingly clear waters allow you to snorkel or dive, seeing colourful coral and marine life such as giant clams. Water sports are popular, including surfing, particularly on the south and west coasts.

Back

Prambanan Temple

The largest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia, the iconic structure of Prambanan sits close to the Buddhist complex at Borobudur. A World Heritage Site, its towering 47 metre high central temple dominates one of the most beautiful religious sites in Indonesia, one that marked the return of Hinduism to Central Java.

Back

Ramayana ballet

The Ramayana ballet tells the story of a legendary epic, presented in a series of graceful dance movements accompanied by gamelan music – an orchestra of traditional Javanese instruments. The ballet brings together different aspects of traditional Javanese culture with dance, drama, music and costume all on display. Performers do not speak during the dance. The only storyteller comes from the sinden, a female singer who describes the story through Javanese song. The story of Ramayana tells the heroic tale of Prince Rama and his loyal wife Sita. It is an epic story, a metaphor about the triumph of good over evil. Prambanan temple is a wonderful backdrop against which to see this breathtaking tale

Back

Borobudur

A sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site, the 9th century Buddhist temple complex at Borobudur lies just to the north west of Yogkarta. Buried under volcanic ash for centuries, its huge stepped pyramid and exquisite reliefs lie at the centre of walled city that was built by Java’s first ruling sultan, Mangkubumi.

Back

Mt Bromo

Part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Mount Bromo (2,392m) is one of the most captivating sights in Eastern Java. This still active volcano lies at the heart of a stunning natural reserve and a sunrise visit to its crater’s edge offers some breathtaking views across the surrounding landscapes.

Back

West Bali National Park

The most northerly point in Bali, and the island’s only national park, this stunning setting encompasses volcanic peaks, dense mangrove forests and some of the best diving and snorkelling in the region. There are also opportunities to take to traditional Balinese fishing boats in the early mornings to search for dolphins.

Back

Mt Batur

The active volcanic peak of Mount Batur rises up from the edge of a giant caldera in the mountains around Kintamani. Magnificently set before the largest lake in Bali, the black lave slopes rise up some 1,717m, offering the opportunity for a stunning two hour sunrise trek to its summit.
