The Imperial Cities of Fez and Marrakech

Rabat (1 night), Fez (2 nights), Marrakech (3 nights)

Fez, the cultural heart of Morocco. Walking through the labyrinthine streets of the medina, you are transported to another world. Experience the bustle, noises, colours and aromas of a way of life that has changed little over countless generations. The only way to explore is on foot, as vehicles can’t enter the narrow passageways that wind their way past the vendors and artisans whose tiny shops and studios line the way. The only traffic hold ups are for hand-carts and donkeys laden with assorted wares. Be prepared to haggle in the markets (or souks) and you can pick up fantastic bargains – colourful swatches of fabric, brass lanterns, silk cushions, carved boxes. Leather goods are particularly good, and you will also visit the ancient tanneries in the heart of the medina to witness traditional processes that go back thousands of years. Centuries old, wrapped in mystery, Marrakech - "Morocco City" as the early travellers called it has always been something of a pleasure city. This marketplace was founded on the crossroads of the ancient caravan routes where the southern tribesmen and Berber villagers brought in their goods and sought entertainment. Known as "The Red Pearl of the South" because of the pink ochre colour of its buildings, Marrakech is the second Imperial capital after Fez and has been the stronghold of many powerful dynasties.  Read more about The Imperial Cities of Fez and Marrakech
