THE WILDEBEEST MIGRATION

The annual wildebeest migration across the plains of the Masai Mara is perhaps the most spectacular wildlife pageant on earth. Each year at the end of the rainy season (normally the end of May), hundreds of thousands of wildebeest move north from the Serengeti in Tanzania into Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of greener pastures, arriving in July and August. Joined by herds of gazelles, antelopes and zebras, so that at times there are more than a million animals on the move, their progress monitored by the various predators who find a ready-made source of food, picking off the weaker and younger animals along the way. You are likely to see lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas shadowing the herds. The migration period makes for wildlife viewing at its most breathtaking.....

HOT AIR BALLOON SAFARI MASAI MARA

For a unique perspective of the wildlife of the Masai Mara, nothing can beat the experience of floating above the plains in a hot air balloon. Flights are arranged in the early morning.You are collected from your tented camp or lodge and taken to the launch site,where you meet your pilot, receive a short briefing and watch your balloon being inflated.You take off as the sun rises, floating in whichever direction the winds of the morning take you.Your pilot can precisely control the altitude, so you may fly at treetop height in places, or rise to 1,000 feet for a panoramic view. From time to time your pilot must put heat into the balloon with the powerful ‘whisper burners’. In between these ‘burns’, there is nothing but silence and the natural sounds below. The flight lasts approximately one hour and you can celebrate in the traditional manner with champagne on landing. The price is £265 per person. Early booking is recommended.....

Governors Camp is situated in the northern Masai Mara. If you time your arrival correctly, you may be lucky enough to witness the great migration. Governors Camp offers a perfect setting in which to witness this, as well as spotting other wildlife that hunt and reside in the surrounding area. This entire safari camp is under canvas, but it has all the comforts of a five star hotel. The 38 tents are in the classic safari style and are spacious and tasteful. Some line the riverbank and offer views of wildlife that may approach the river while others have views across the sweeping plains. Larsens Tented Camp is set in lush lawns on the bank of the Uaso Nyiro, a river in Samburu National Reserve. Tranquillity and nature embrace you the minute you enter Larsens with the river being the perfect stage for an endless pageant of wildlife - elephants rolling and trumpeting in the shallows, timid impala nervously drinking, baboons and vervet monkeys swinging through the canopy of trees. There are 17 spacious airy tents all raised on wooden platforms, each being named after a bird. Each tent has casual colonial elegance, hot showers and a surprising degree of comfort with dressing gowns in the tent and comfort able leather safari chairs. The dining tent is open on three sides and faces the river. A first class dinner elegantly served by candlelight on tables set with silver and Larsens china. The Ark

The Ark

Set in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, this unique game lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, which attracts a host of wildlife. The Ark has three decks, which allow game viewing from superb vantage points off numerous balconies and lounges. The ground level bunker provides excellent photographic opportunities and takes you closer to the animals than you would have thought possible. The Ark has 60 'cabin-styled' en suite rooms. Rooms are comfortably furnished and enjoy a view of the forest waterhole. Cabins are fitted with buzzers to announce the arrival of one of the 'Big Five' at the waterhole (the buzzer sounds once for an elephant, twice for a rhino, three times for a leopard and four times for something really special). Dinner and breakfastare served in the main dining room. Located on one of the viewing decks are a lounge and bar, which remain open all night for tea and coffee. Children under 7 not permitted.....

Sarova Lion Hill Lodge overlooks Lake Nakuru, offering a unique vantage point. Directions from Dorking BR Station:

Turn left at the main road (A24) and take a right into London Road as you reach the Esso garage, bringing you to the High Street. Turn right and continue onto South Street at a Y junction that is the start of the one way system. Junction road is on the right hand side, past Waitrose. The walk will take about 15 minutes. Alternatively take a taxi from the station and the fare is around £4.00.
