CHIAWA CAMP LOWER ZAMBEZI NATIONAL

Chiawa Camp is a private luxury tented camp with a host of activities including game drives, walking safaris, river safaris, fishing, birding and canoeing. Resting peacefully in a grove of mahogany and acacia trees, the camp can accommodate up to 16 guests in 8 wellappointed safari tents. Set on elevated timber decks providing both security and panoramic views of the Zambezi River, all tents are ensuite and have insect screens and solar-powered lighting. The thatched lounge with upstairs observation deck, bar and dining areas look over the Zambezi River and the animals that regularly drink around the lodge.....

KAKULI BUSH CAMP SOUTH LUANGWA

Kakuli is set on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. The main ‘chitenge’ overlooks a large floodplain and the Luangwa River. Accommodation is in four tents each under a shady thatch roof. Large ensuite bathrooms are open to the sky behind each tent. All of the tents overlook the river. You may explore the areas around Kakuli either on foot or by vehicle. The area is teeming with game and the river in front of the camp is home to over 400 hippo. Bird watching is superb, with over 400 recorded species. Hundreds of large water birds can be seen wading through the shallows while birds of prey soar overhead.....

KAPANI SAFARI LODGE SOUTH LUANGWA

Luangwa Valley in Zambia is home to worldfamous wildlife concentrations and varieties of animals and birds. Kapani Safari Lodge is the erstwhile home of Norman Carr (see previous column), and is a permanent camp accommodating up to twenty guests. Accommodation is in brick-built chalets with thatched roofs, spacious living areas, luxurious interiors and comfortable beds with walk-in mosquito nets. The rooms look out over the oxbow lagoon, as does the wooden deck, where meals are served. The main ‘chitenge’ (thatched rondaval) contains the lounge area and bar as well as a small library of natural history books. The sparkling pool is a wonderful refuge from the heat of the day. Game viewing is excellent at Kapani.Your guide will ensure you have every opportunity to see all the wildlife, birds and varying vegetation. RIVER CLUB ZAMBIA

Situated on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River, 18 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls, the camp has an Edwardian flavour, and guests here enjoy the sights and sounds of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River in a peaceful and tranquil setting away from the crowds. There are 10 luxury, thatched chalets with ensuite facilities including a bath, shower, toilet and basin. All the rooms have fans. The rooms are all completely open in the front giving guests the best possible views of the Zambezi. The main dining room and lounge also has an interesting library.....

The Royal Livingstone Hotel is located in Livingstone (Zambia). Hotel facilities include outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and golf course. Kapani Safari Lodge

Kapani Safari Lodge is an exclusive, privately owned camp situated on the banks of a large lagoon beside the Luangwa River. Accommodating only 20 guests, the ten brick and thatch rooms are designed for the warmer weather with high ceilings, overhead fans and large gauzed windows. Each of the eight standard suites has an en-suite bathroom and a lounge with bar fridge and individual room safes. Our two Lagoon Houses and are very private and spacious with en-suite facilities – perfect for honeymooners. The camp is on mains electricity and offers most modern facilities. A thatched building in the centre of camp houses the lounge and library. It is pleasantly cool in the hot weather and warm and cosy in the cooler months with an open fire. The bar and dining area overlooks the beautiful Kapani Lagoon where there is plenty of space for guests to relax between game drives and watch the many hippos and crocs in the lagoon. ....

Mchenja Bush Camp

Mchenja Bush Camp is set in a grove of magnificent ebony trees - Mchenja Bush Camp is a luxurious, elegant and stylish tented camp overlooking a huge sweeping bend in the Luangwa. Each of the five specially designed octagonal tents have their own private en-suite open air bathroom plus free standing, roll-top baths with a river view. The beautiful central chitenje is built around one of the old fallen Mchenja (ebony) trees and guests can cool off there in the camp’s plunge pool.....

Nkwali Camp

Nkwali Camp has a wide view of the Luangwa River. On Robin’s private land, and overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, Nkwali is ideally situated for the start of your safari. The six rooms all look out over the river and have open air bathrooms. ....

Chongwe River Camp

Chongwe River Camp is situated on the boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park where the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers converge. The camp itself looks onto the two rivers and the mountains of the escarpment to the north and is situated in a wilderness area where elephant are more numerous than people. The lodge features ten chalets and a honeymoon suite, all of which have their own luxury open air bathroom on suite. When you are not in search of game, time can be spent relaxing in the camp over looking the river. By the river is a constant procession of game coming down to drink as well as over 250 species of birds.....

Nsefu Camp

This remote and small camp lies within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. Nsefu was the first game camp in Zambia and dates back to the early fifties. Nsefu Camp reopened in 1999 and is in keeping with the original style with 6 traditional rondavels with en-suite facilities. Nsefu Camp also includes a terrace area where game graze. The bar is tucked in beside a huge dormant termite mound and overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game, especially leopard at night. Each of the 6 spacious roundavels have clear views of the river and offer facilities to charge batteries and electrical equipment. ....

Luwi Bush Camp

Luwi Bush Camp consists of 4 thatched bamboo chalets set in a beautifully shady grove of trees on the banks of the Luwi sand river. The rooms are simple yet extremely comfortable with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. There is a hippo filled lagoon close by and walking safaris from camp usually finish with sundowners there, watching the sunset over a landscape unchanged for thousands of years. Brunch is taken in the shade of a huge old tree and dinner under the stars. The Luwi area is famous for its lions and the thrill of tracking them on foot is an experience not to be missed.....

Nsolo Bush Camp

Nsolo Bush Camp has 4 spacious open sided thatched chalets built on raised wooden decks with reed walls and en-suite bathrooms. Each chalet is set under the shade of large evergreen trees with private verandahs overlooking the surrounding bush. There is a chitenje with bar and dining offering a peaceful refuge where guests can study the camps collection of books or view a variety of game at the waterhole. Nsolo is the local name for the honey guide and the camp was named after this extraordinary little bird. By amazing co-incidence it was later learnt that this area used to home to a famous local hunter – also called Nsolo!....

Lufupa Camp

Lufupa Camp is situated in the centre of the northern sector of the 22 500 square kilometre Kafue National Park, at the confluence of the Lufupa and Kafue rivers; these and the Lunga River are all perennial tributaries of the Kafue River. There are 6 large Meru-style tents with en-suite facilities. Dining and bar area are under huge jackalberry trees, overlooking the Kafue River. Dinners served in a traditional-style boma under the stars, next to a lively campfire or in the tented dining room overlooking this impressive river.....

Sindabezi Island

Situated on the upper Zambezi Sindabezi Island offers luxury accommodation in individual thatched chalets. Only a short motor boat cruise away from its sister property the Tongabezi which is located on the main shores of the Zambezi. Sinabezi Island has only five open-sided thatched cottages, allowing guests to soak up the sights and sounds of the African bush in the perfect, pristine setting. Each cottage has outlooks over the Zambezi River, en-suite bathrooms with showers, luxury toiletries and comfortable furnishings. Views across the flood plains of the Zambezi and into the nearby National Park complete the experience. Sindabezi Island is unique. Tena Tena Camp

This remote and small camp lies within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. A grove of mahogany trees shade the large custom-made tents. From the thatched dining room and bar, guests can watch the elephants, hippo and antelope on the riverbank. Tena Tena Camp has 5 tents, each with a dressing room, open air bathroom and private veranda that overlooks a water hole. Most meals are taken under the shade of a huge Mahogany tree in the centre of the camp. ....

Busanga Bush Camp

Busanga Bush Camp in the north-western section of the Busanga is about as 'wild' as you can get in today's world: an unfenced mosaic of expansive grassy seasonal floodplains and "dambos" (open grassy areas that sometimes will fill up with rainwater). This camp is perfectly situated for some of the best lion viewing in Africa. It caters for 8 guests in 4 well-appointed rooms built of reed and canvas with wall-to-wall views of the spectacular wildlife that frequents the plain in front of the camp. Activities include game drives and night drives, led by qualified guides who are extremely knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. For those interested in birding, the park boasts 491 species, including endemics such as Chaplin's Barbet.....

There are few experiences more exciting than tracking big game through the African bush. Ranging from the mighty Victoria Falls to the world renowned National Parks of the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys. The fact that the country has, for so long, been largely overlooked as a tourist destination is one of its greatest assets.
