THE GARDEN ROUTE

CAPE TOWN

Dominated by the iconic majesty of Table Mountain, Cape Town is without doubt one of the most spectacularly located cities in the world. Originally founded as a refuelling station for ships plying the trade routes to the East, Cape Town today is a cosmopolitan and vibrant city boasting a wealth of fascinating sightseeing options both in the city and the surrounding areas. Table Mountain and the former prison of Robben Island are the best known highlights however there is so much more to see. Kirstenbosch Gardens contain one of the worlds great plant collections, the revitalised city centre is perfect for sightseeing and awash with excellent museums, explore the colourful Bo Kaap district at the foot of Signal Hill, experience something of the modern South African life in a township visit or wander the bustling waterfront and trendy Camps Bay. WHALE MIGRATION

South Africa presents one of the best locations on earth to view the annual migrations of cetaceans. Each June its southern coast becomes a magnet for southern right whales, humpbacks and even rarely seen brydes whale, who come here to breed and feed, before disappearing again around October. This region is also phenomenally rich in dolphin sightings, with common and bottlenose dolphins regularly seen along the coast.....

THE BATTLEFIELDS

The kingdom of KwaZulu-Natal is steeped in history. This is the area where over a century ago the bloodiest battles in South Africa’s history were fought, involving the Boers, the British, and also the Zulus. One of the most famous battles was at Isandlwana,where the British incurred their biggest colonial defeat, and the subsequent attack on Rorke’s Drift, immortalised in the film ‘Zulu’,where some 100 British soldiers repelled 4,000 Zulus for 12 hours, earning them a total of 12 Victoria Crosses. Spend some time in this historic and scenic area, taking in a battlefield tour accompanied by an expert providing an emotive commentary on the two battle sites, including the cairns at Isandlwana, and the besieged hospital at Rorke’s Drift.....
