Cruising: The Facts
Travelling by water can get you up close and personal with a variety of wildlife and environments, and it’s a relaxing way to travel – so it’s no wonder so many people are choosing cruise holidays. We’ve pulled together some of the top Latin American cruise experiences over the next few pages – and if you’re wondering whether cruising’s for you, read on for the answers to questions posed by first-timers.
Who takes cruises?
A mix of people. Cruising is no longer the preserve of the elderly, with adventurous options (fancy kayaking in Antarctica?) attracting all ages.
What if I get seasick?
Most cruises traverse calm waters where motion sickness is rarely a problem. However, some expanses of open water are particularly turbulent (the Drake Passage to Antarctica is notorious); for these, larger boats tend to be more stable so less prone to causing queasiness. Take medication with you, and try other tactics: focus on the horizon, and consider anti-seasickness wristbands and ginger biscuits or tea.
What are the cabins like?
It depends on your vessel, but you’ll generallyget more space than you’d expect, and on many boats – including the new M/V Aqua (see p18) – all cabins have sea or river views, en-suite bathrooms and, where called for, air-conditioning.
What’s the food like?
Mouthwatering! Chefs operate in sophisticated galleys and can knock up feasts in the middle of the ocean (no surprise that seafood is usually fantastic).
What is there to do on board?
Experts are usually on hand for lectures, guiding and informal chats. There may be opportunities for workshops (such as painting or photography) and some vessels even have spas and gyms – it’s not just quoits on deck!
I’m adventurous – what other activities are on offer?
Take your pick – from Zodiac shore landings in Antarctica, to tributary exploration along the Amazon, to snorkelling in the Galapagos.
How many other passengers will there be?
Boat sizes vary, but – Bales offers a wide range of vessels sizes and styles, including intimate craft – the gorgeous M/V Aqua has just 12 cabins.
Will I have to wear a tux for dinner?
No – unless you really want to…
