Costa Rica's temperature differences are governed by altitude rather than seasons due to its central mountainous terrain, contrasted with its low-lying coastal areas on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. San Jose, located on the central plain, enjoys a pleasant spring-like climate throughout the year. Evenings can be cool, however, so a jumper may be required. In the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the temperature is usually cool and pleasant all year round. Tortuguero on the Caribbean coastline experiences much hotter temperatures, and the high humidity that occurs can be oppressive at times. The rainy season in Costa Rica runs approximately from May to November. However, rain is not totally isolated to the latter period as the Caribbean coastal region can experience rain throughout the year and showers are not uncommon in the other areas visited.
