Welcome to Botswana

Renowned for its abundant and varied wildlife, and it's wide open, sparsely populated countryside, Botswana has set aside a large percentage of its land for national parks and games reserves. It is described by the National Geographic as "one of the best
preserved corners of wilderness left in the world."

The customary entrance to the Okavango Delta is by light aircraft and this was how my thrilling adventure to one of the world’s most highly esteemed safari destinations began. And my what an entrance! From the air the Okavango Delta resembles nature’s own orchestrated golf course, comprising of an immense labyrinth of creeks, lagoons, islands, and riverine forest. It is even possible to spot a herd of elephant or giraffe traversing the flood plains as you swoop over!

Game drives in the Delta are unpredictable by nature, but the privacy of the sighting makes each remarkable. I recall pausing for a sundowner and watching a distant lion pride lazily contemplate a group of Red Lechwee, against the backdrop of a stunning sunset. Witnessing this remarkable scene by myself, even at the close of the season, seemed extraordinary to say the least.

Visiting the Delta was an enthralling experience. Of course Botswana is one of Africa’s most expensive destinations, however to me this trip was proof that to the open-minded traveller there is much to appreciate during lower seasons too, when prices are more reasonable. I love the manner safaris are conducted here as well as the variety in routine and these are staple ingredients. Then there are dramatic skies, fabulous photography, plenty of babies and just possibly your own slice of private wilderness…
