Swaziland–South Africa

During my trip to South Africa, I had the pleasure of visiting the Kingdom of Swaziland, a former British Protection Territory now ruled by King MsWati III.
After going through customs, we were guided round a typical Swazi village followed by a cultural show. Enchanting views followed as we made our way through the lowveld towards the Valley of Ezulwini for our overnight stay.
We made a visit to the National Swaziland museum for a clearer understanding of the culture and the history. A big part of the Swaziland tradition is their Umhlanga Reed dance ceremony where all the unmarried Swazi/Zulu girls and woman travel from their villages to participate in an eight-day event in front of the King who can then choose a wife.
Swazilandis also famous for its production of beautiful coloured candles which are shipped all over the world. Whilst at the candle factory I attempted to mould a candle into the shape of an elephant. Much to the amusement of the expert candle makers mine looked more like a toad!
Although you only need a few nights in Swaziland, it gives you a taste of village life and is something a bit different from the usual itineraries of South Africa.

Directions from Dorking BR Station:
Turn left at the main road (A24) and take a right into London Road as you reach the Esso garage, bringing you to the High Street. Turn right and continue onto South Street at a Y junction that is the start of the one way system. Junction road is on the right hand side, past Waitrose. The walk will take about 15 minutes. Alternatively take a taxi from the station and the fare is around £4.00.
