Places to see and things to do

ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

One of Africa’s great game parks, Etosha can boast a staggering variety of game and birdlife, with some 114 species of animals and 340 species of birds recorded across its 32,000 square kilometres of desert pans and open savannahs. At its centre lies the vast depression of the Etosha Pan, a spectacular expanse of white salt pans, attracting a myriad of wildlife. Game is abundant across these open spaces, with regular sightings of large herds of zebra, gemsbok and elephant, as well as rare black rhino.

FISH RIVER CANYON

One of Africa’s most amazing natural marvels, the spectacular Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon on earth, reaching almost 550 metres in depth and extending for some 161 km across the semi-arid landscapes of southern Namibia. Its famous hiking trail is considered one of the best in southern Africa, whilst the canyon itself is home to a variety of bird and animal life.

SKELETON COAST PARK

Starting south of the Orange River and continuing up into neighbouring Angola, the Skeleton Coast offers one of the most unique coastal landscapes in the world. Its somewhat evocative legend stems from the dense sea mists and treacherous currents that have long made this stretch of coast dangerous to passing shipping. A landscape of coastal dunes, canyons and mountains, it is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife and can boast a fascinating and ancient native culture.

SOSSUSVLEI

Located in the Namib Naukluft Park, in the heart of the Namib Desert, the surreal vistas of Sossusvlei are a major highlight of any visit to Namibia. Containing some of the highest sand dunes in the world, some reaching a height of over 300 metres, this remarkable area affords reasonably easy access to one of the world’s most spectacular desert landscapes, where a walk to the top of one of the towering dunes can present quite magnificent views across the desert scenery. Sunrise and sunset offer the best times to visit, when the spectacular colours play across the land, burnishing it in golden glows, presenting a wealth of magical photographic opportunities and surely one of the most memorable settings in Africa.
