After my trip to Sri Lanka it became clear how the word “Serendipity” came about……the English author Horace Walpole took the name “Serendip” (Sri Lanka’s name at the time – 1750’s), to describe the action of “making fortunate discoveries by accident”.

Sri Lanka or “The Pearl of the Orient” as it is also known, is truly an island steeped in history with many wonderful things to see and discover! From the breathtaking and stunning natural scenery, which one can particularly enjoy if you climb the summit of Sigiriya, a magnificent fortress located deep in the jungle. Besides the amazing, uninterrupted views, half way up you can have a rest to see the well preserved cave frescoes.

Whilst based in this area it is also possible to see the Ancient Cities, with their sprawling complexes of palaces, temples and mansions. Travelling south Kandy and its surrounds, this is home to a fascinating Elephant Orphanage of Pinnawela… watch the baby elephants having a wash….and feeding time….certainly not to be missed!! Shop here for locally mined jewels, gemstones and unique jewellery too. Experience days of the bygone era when staying in and around Nuwara Eliya…..where tea plantations can be seen for miles and miles. Witness how tea is produced and enjoy the final product.

Moving on, a couple of nights staying near a National Park is recommended…whilst very different to an African safari, it proved to be as much fun and our lodge was very comfortable. Finally, I can’t fail to mention the option of relaxing at a luxurious hotel, located on one of the long stretches of soft golden sandy beach…fringed with palm trees…just picture holding the spa treatment menu in one hand and a cocktail in the other….my idea of paradise!”
