Fly from London Heathrow to Amman this afternoon on Royal Jordanian (4 hours 30 minutes). On arrival we will be met and transferred to Le Meridien Hotel.

Late this morning we drive north, to the superbly preserved remains of Jerash, widely believed to be the best example of a provincial Roman city anywhere in the world. A superb collection of marble colonnaded streets lead us to the majestic Temple of Artemis and the Triumphal Arch of the Emperor Hadrian. Heading back to Amman we have a brief tour of the city en route to our hotel.

Today we transfer south, to the Dana Nature Reserve (120 KM/approximately 2 hours) and the foothills of Rumana Mountain, where we stay overnight at nearby Rumana Camp. On arrival we will meet our trekking guide and after lunch there is the opportunity to ‘warm up’ with a short optional walk in the surrounding Nature Reserve.

This morning we set off from Dana Village, overlooking the desert landscapes of Wadi Dana, and head out towards the Dana Reforestation Project. Descending into the wadi we will take lunch al fresco, before continuing along the valley to the first of our overnight campsites (8 KM/ approximate trekking time 7 hours).

After breakfast we continue towards Mansura Village and then along Wadi Araba, where a landscape of majestic desert vistas and shimmering mountains lie below us. Descending along a rocky escarpment into the Huwai Valley, we reach our camp later this afternoon and enjoy the stunning views over the nearby gorge as we settle down for the evening (7 KM/approximate trekking time 6 hours).

Continuing downhill, we then have a tough climb up to our lunch spot, overlooking a matchless landscape of unsurpassed majesty. From here we ascend a little further, before a final descent
down a scree slope to the campsite at Gubur Al Wuhaidat (11 KM/approximate trekking time 8 hours).

Hiking through a landscape of rocky gorges and narrow valleys, our morning’s walk brings us to Siq al Barid (Little Petra), Continuing to the 9,000 year old Neolithic site at Baldha we then navigate a rocky trail of ledges to arrive exhilarated at Petra’s magnificent Monastery. Descending from the sacrificial ‘High Places’, our day ends in Wadi Musa (the main town located near the entrance to Petra), where we transfer to the Crowne Plaza Resort Petra (10 KM/approximate trekking time 9 hours).

Lost for centuries, Petra’s dramatic ‘Rose-Red City’ is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites anywhere on the planet, a city of incredible majesty with colonnaded streets, royal tombs and a spectacular theatre. Today we have the opportunity to visit this gem, entering through its narrow Siq and marvelling at the magnificent grandeur of its famous ‘Treasury’.

A leisurely transfer back to Amman this morning sees us returning to the capital and an overnight stay at Le Meridien Hotel (180 KM/approximately 3 hours).
