The Inca Empire, largest of all the pre-Columbian civilisations, was at its zenith when Francisco Pizarro’s conquistadors arrived in 1532. The Spaniards plundered the ‘Kingdom of the Sun’ of its gold, but failed to locate the legendary ‘Lost City’ of the Incas. It was not until 1911 that the fabulous ruins of Machu Picchu were discovered, and our excellent comprehensive escorted tour of Peru allows you to spend a night at this evocative site, steeped in mystery and romance.
