Depart Tripoli for Yefren (130 KM/approximately 4 hours with sightseeing en route), which during the 19th century was a centre of resistance against the Ottoman occupation. Set amidst the forested slopes of the Nafusa Mountains it is reminiscent of many of the old Berber villages that occupy the rocky landscapes of North Africa. En route view the Berber architecture of Qsar el-Haj and overnight at the Yeffren Hotel.

Close to the Tunisian border lies the atmospheric town of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an oasis of twisting alleys and courtyards that evokes the true romance of the desert. Spend today driving across an ageless landscape of arid desert, travelling via the Berber settlements of Tarmeisa and Kabaw, en route to this hidden treasure. Accommodation at the Dar Ghadames Hotel. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Desert’ and one of the oldest pre-Saharan cities, Ghadames was an important stop for the caravans and pilgrims crossing the harsh desert terrains of Saharan Africa during the 18th century. Its vital role as a staging post along this well travelled route saw it grow to become an important trading post for the merchants from the north and the slavers from the south. Sightseeing this morning includes a visit to the museum, followed by a walk through the labyrinthine streets of the picturesque old town. Late this afternoon we will journey out into the desert, to watch the surrounding Saharan dunes bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun.

The journey back to the capital affords the opportunity to sit back and enjoy once more the rich immensity of Libya’s desert landscapes, following in the footsteps of the caravans of old as we head back to Tripoli for the last time.
