Like the fabled cities of Xanadu or Eldorado, for centuries Timbuktu enjoyed an almost mythical reputation as a place where the streets were paved with gold. European explorers set off to find this city of limitless wealth, but time after time returned without success. In 1826 the Frenchman Rene Caillié finally reached Timbuktu, but instead of fabulous jewelled palaces he discovered “a mass of ill-looking houses, built of earth”. It may have been a disappointment to Caillié, but Timbuktu today is well worth a visit. An atmospheric metropolis on the edge of the Sahara, with well-preserved World Heritage Sites, and a fascinating old town of narrow lanes and flat-topped houses of sun-dried mud.
