October marks the start of Japan’s most vibrantly coloured and spectacular season, as the leaves of the maple, or Momeji, trees turn incredible hues of red and orange. To celebrate this beautiful transformation Bales Worldwide is offering a new 12 day Japan Highlights journey, departing 15 October, which takes in the best of the country and also coincides with the renowned Autumn matsuri (festival) in Kyoto. The October holiday offers a chance to see scenes of astounding beauty as the leaves change colour, particurlarly in the ancient city of Kyoto where the momeji cover much of the mountainous area to the east of the city. As well as this natural spectacle you will also witness the wondefully colourful matsuri - a glorious opportunity to see the history of the country brought to life. The city is decorated with flags and lanterns as over 2,000 people wearing authentic costumes from every period in Japanese history parade the streets.

The Land of the Rising Sun is still a captivating enigma, offering a unique blend of ancient traditions and 21st century modernity. The Japan Highlights trip takes you on a journey from its vibrant modern capital, to the heart of it cultural and religious traditions. Starting in Tokyo, you will take in ‘must see’ elements of this bustling city, including the majestic Imperial Palace Plaza and the incredible 7th century Asakusa Kannon Buddhist Temple. On day four a trip is organised to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Toshugo Shrine and Rinoji Temple in the town of Nikko – an important pilgrimage centre for over a millennia!

Leaving Tokyo on the famous Bullet Train, you head to Hiroshima, passing the iconic Mount Fuji on route. Tour Japan’s ‘City of Peace’, including the emotive Peace Park and the beautiful Japanese gardens of Shukkeien. Day seven sees an excursion to the enchanting island of Miyamjima, with its sacred Shinto shrines, before getting back on the Bullet train the next day and heading to Kyoto. This ancient city is renowned as the home of the famous Geishas and is a riot of colour at this time of year.

Explore the city and immerse yourself in Japanese culture, visit the country’s oldest temples, walk around some of the 17 World Heritage Sites, wonder at the gigantic bronze Buddha in nearby Nara – and of course enjoy the wonderful spectacle that is the matsuri.
