Top 5 Alternative Wildlife

Top 5 Wildlife to see

Pink Dolphin

Pink Dolphin - Brazil

On many rivers in the Amazon basin you should catch a glimpse of the pink dolphins.  They live only in the tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. They come in different shades of pink, from a dull grey-pink, to rosy coloured pink, to a bright pink like that of the flamingo. The colour variation is due to the clarity of the water in which the dolphin lives; the darker the water, the pinker the dolphin will be.  These animals are also known to flush to a bright pink when excited.  You will have to be quick to spot one as the dolphin surfaces unpredictably for just a second or so at a time to breathe, but when they do it is a wonderful sight to see.

Orang-utan

Orang-utan - Borneo

The orang-utan, which in Malay means “man of the forest”, is Asia’s only great ape and can be found in Borneo or Sumatra. These wonderful creatures are omnivores so they eat both plants and animals, and can live up to 50 years. You are able to see these fantastic animals during our “Orang-utans and Longhouses tour” at the Sepilok sanctuary which was founded in 1964 and covers 43sq kms of rainforest. The aim of this sanctuary is to preserve and rehabilitate before reintroducing them back to the wild. You will see the feeding time when the apes, will swing majestically through the forests to the feeding platforms so you can witness them in their natural habitat.

Quetzal

Quetzal - Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s national bird, the multi-coloured Quetzal, favours the humid rainforest and is at its most visible in the Monteverde Cloud Forest and Braulio Carrillo National Park. It derives its name from the Aztec word “quetzalli”, meaning precious or beautiful and anyone lucky enough to spot this bird can bear witness to its colourful plumage. The bird is indigenous to Central America and has even lent its name to the Guatemalan currency. Revered by ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures, its feathers adorned royalty and priests during ceremonies. Quetzals have iridescent green or golden-green wing coverts, back, chest and head and a bright red belly.  With resplendent tail feathers, which for males can grow up to a metre in length, these birds are under threat in their natural habitat.

polar bear

Polar Bear – Arctic

Polar bears are the largest of carnivores located in the Arctic Circle. One of the most powerful animals in the world, they are born both deaf and dumb; however use their strong sense of smell to hunt for seals across the snow and icy waters.  The average polar bear lives round 25 years and have evolved to deal with the cold weather with their thick fur to keep warm, long necks to seek out prey in holes, large feet and sharp claws to walk on ice. Polar bears have become an endangered species as the melting polar ice caps ruin their habitat due to global warming.

Leatherback Turtle

Turtle – Oman

Sur in Oman has long been known for its connections with the sea; its ancient watchtowers overlook a breathtaking coastline that is lapped by the rich waters of the Arabian Sea. Not far away, along the peninsula’s eastern edge lie the beaches of Ras al Jinz, an important year round nesting ground for green turtles and recently proclaimed a turtle reserve. Turtles come here, to lay an estimated 6,000 to 13,000 eggs providing the ideal opportunity for visitors to watch giant Green turtles lying and hatching their eggs in the soft warm sand, you may also be lucky enough to see young hatchlings scuttling back to the warm ocean waters. The beach is distinguished by its spectacular bays and rock formations which are also a haven for large numbers of birds matching the seemingly endless diversity of Oman’s landscapes.
